Tivoli Storage Manager

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) is a software for data backup , by IBM is developed and distributed. The product was called ADSTAR Distributed Storage Manager (ADSM) before it was renamed Tivoli Storage Manager in 1999. In 2015, Tivoli Storage Manager was again renamed Spectrum Protect.

TSM is part of the Tivoli product family and works according to the client-server principle: the TSM server manages the stored data, storage media, backup devices, clients and users, provides automatic backups and much more. The client (node), on the other hand, is above all responsible for data backup.

Up to version 5.5 the TSM server was based on a proprietary database with an architectural maximum size of 530 GB and 13 GB of log memory. It could be addressed via the command line using TSM commands, SQL statements (SELECT only), ODBC or user-defined server scripts. Starting with version 6.1 it will be replaced by a DB2 database. Up to version 3 there was a separate client program for administration; this was replaced by a web server installed at the same time as the TSM server , so that the entire server could also be administered via a web browser . In addition to the command line , the Integrated Solutions Console (ISC), which provides a GUI for administration, is currently used for administration .

The organization of the data consists of different container-like structures: A domain follows the policy , this in turn is based on management classes and in these in turn the individual backup and archive groups are located. Attributes such as retention times, versioning and backup techniques can thus be assigned at the most varied of levels. This box-like structure allows a high degree of flexibility.

The TSM supports backups on magnetic and optical media as well as on hard disk . There are two main variants: backup and archive . During the backup, the data is saved incrementally and you can version your data. The versioning rules are possible down to the level of individual files. Full backups are not necessary, but of course also possible, but are primarily ensured by the possibility of archiving. The archive is usually an additional full data backup without versions.

The TSM standard software also includes HSM ( Hierarchical Storage Management ), software that allows data to be outsourced to tape according to certain criteria, and thus represents an extended form of data storage .

There are also various modules, TSM for Mail / Databases / etc. (formerly called TDP - Tivoli Data Protection), which z. B. allow backing up and restoring of Oracle databases, SAP R / 3 systems, Exchange databases , Microsoft SQL Server and other application data.
