Giorgio Carlo Calvi di Bergolo (born March 15, 1887 in Athens , † February 25, 1977 in Rome ) was an Italian general .

He came from the old Piedmontese noble family Calvi, who were Counts of Bergolo . In 1923 he married the daughter of the Italian king Viktor Emanuel III. , Jolanda Margherita of Savoy .

Calvi di Bergolo was a cavalry officer, participated in the First World War and later commanded, among other things, the cavalry regiment Nizza Cavalleria .

During the Second World War he commanded, among other things, the armored division "Centauro" , with which he distinguished himself in early 1943 in the Battle of Tunisia in the fight against Patton's II US Corps.

Two days after the announcement of the armistice between Italy and the Allies on September 8, 1943, he took over command of the “ open city ” of Rome on behalf of the Germans . On September 23rd, Calvi di Bergolo was arrested and briefly deported to Germany. From the end of 1943 to 1945 he lived with his family in Switzerland .
