history

Tjaereborg - a place name becomes a brand. In 1950, in the Danish town of Tjæreborg, some parishioners who were fond of traveling came together around their Protestant pastor Eilif Krogager to travel to Spain . Krogager took over the organization. He obtained various travel offers and found them all to be too expensive. He then chartered two coaches for his group himself. During the entire trip to Spain, the pastor acted as tour guide, interpreter and organizer at the same time. The trip ended in a financial fiasco, but Eilif Krogager recognized a gap in the market: he decided to professionalize the travel organization in order to bring his Nordic compatriots to the sunny south more cheaply than other tour operators. Krogager first bought several coaches, later he chartered airplanes and founded his own airline with Sterling Airways. The hotel offer was limited to popular houses with a large capacity. The trips were sold through specially founded Tjaereborg travel agencies. Krogager's tour operator Tjaereborg was already the largest in Scandinavia in the 1970s, and Sterling Airlines was one of the most important charter companies in Europe. With the size it had achieved, Tjaereborg was soon able to conquer the travel market with low prices.

Tjaereborg Germany

On December 20, 1973, Tjaereborg Reisen GmbH Germany was entered in the commercial register as a wholly owned subsidiary of Tjæreborg Denmark. The first German Tjaereborg travel agency opened in Düsseldorf in 1974, further offices in Hamburg, Hanover and Berlin followed. After three years, Tjaereborg was already the fourth largest tour operator in Germany. In 1981 allkauf Warenhaus GmbH with its headquarters in Mönchengladbach acquired the Tjaereborg company. On January 1, 1987, Jahn Reisen joined Tjaereborg allkauf Reisen with 49.9 percent and increased his stake on December 15, 1989 to 52.6 percent.

In 1990 the former LTU group entered the tour operator Tjaereborg through Jahn Reisen . The headquarters of Tjaereborg allkauf Reisen GmbH remained in Mönchengladbach until the end of 1996, after which it moved to Düsseldorf. On January 1, 2000, LTU Touristik GmbH took over 100 percent of the tour operator Tjaereborg. Tjaereborg has been part of the Rewe Group since January 1st, 2001. At that time, the Cologne-based group took over all tour operator brands from LTU Touristik GmbH ( Jahn Reisen , Tjaereborg, smile & fly, Meier's Weltreisen). The management of Tjaereborg is now based in Cologne.

Tjaereborg Denmark

In Denmark, Tjaereborg was taken over in 2009 by the tour operator Spies, which in turn belongs to the Thomas Cook Group .
