allkauf was a nationwide retail chain based in Mönchengladbach , Germany , which was taken over by Metro AG in 1998 . The brand name then disappeared and some of the existing stores were continued under the new name “ real, - ”.

In 1962, the flour miller founded Eugen Viehof and oil Müller Gerhard Ackermans from Moenchengladbach its first hypermarket Selgros (a portmanteau of Sel bstbedienungs- wholesale market). The discounter concept quickly caught on, and so the first two hypermarkets in Heinsberg and Düren were followed by other wholesale markets in West Germany.

At the end of the 1980s, Ackermans' private investments in media, film and radio stations led to disputes between the two founders. In 1990 Viehof paid his brother-in-law Ackermans around 700 million German marks for his all-purchase share.

After the German reunification , the Allkauf Group expanded rapidly in East Germany. In 1998 Eugen Viehof sold his retail group to the Metro Group for around 2.4 billion marks (the equivalent of around 1.6 billion euros today).

In 1999 Allkauf had 94 self-service department stores, including 19 former plaza stores and nine former Otten franchise stores.

Allkauf also included:

  • 160 travel agencies of Allkauf Touristik Vertriebs GmbH
  • 21 alltronic customer center
  • 90 Allkauf Franchise GmbH photo shops that were sold to Nina's Bildermarkt Sommer GmbH in November 1998.
  • 56 sales offices of Allkauf-Haus GmbH, including 16 show house locations. These were sold in 1998 to massa-Aufbauhaus GmbH based in Simmern (former subsidiary of Metro). The name allkauf-haus continues to exist as a subsidiary of DFH Deutsche Fertighaus Holding AG .
  • the two markets of Krakow and Tychy in Poland were sold to joint venture partner Koninklijke Ahold in November 1998 .

Allkauf was one of the first companies to advertise shirts in the Bundesliga . After the Jägermeister advertising appeared on the jerseys of Eintracht Braunschweig for the first time in the 1973/74 season , Allkauf followed in the 1974/75 season with an advertising label at Fortuna Düsseldorf .
