The Tjuleni Island ( Russian остров Тюлений , Ostrow Tjuleni ) is an uninhabited Russian island in the Sea of Okhotsk . It is located east of the Sakhalin Island .
The island, whose name means Robben Island in German, was discovered by whalers in 1852 . At the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century, tens of thousands of northern fur seals were hunted here.
Individual buildings had existed on the island for a long time. In the 1960s, Soviet fishermen put up a system of fences to hunt seals. Even a hotel was built. When the demand for fur decreased, the business became unattractive and since 2008 the island has been left to nature again. In 2017, the island was cleaned up by EMERCOM volunteers , they removed various debris and other traces of vandalism.
In addition to seals, the island is also home to guillemots and a number of other sea birds , including endangered species such as the Kamchatka gull . BirdLife International has designated the island as an Important Bird Area (RU166) since 2004 .
