Map of Småland in the Viking Age

During the Viking Age (800-1050 AD), Tjust was one of the small empires that later formed Småland . In 1675 Tjust was divided into two medieval administrative areas ("härad") - northern Tjust and southern Tjust. However, both administrative areas had a common jurisdiction in Gamleby.

Today Tjust is synonymous with the municipality of the municipality Västervik used, even if the historical area still Locknevi that in today Vimmerby is municipality, Gärdesrum and Hannäs that today in the Åtvidaberger are municipality and Tryserum and Östra Ed, now in the Valdemarsvik commune .

It is not known where the name Tjust comes from. One theory suggests that the name could be a synonym for the medieval word "thiod" for people. Other assumptions suggest that Tjust could be a word for "the beautiful, the untouched (virgin)".

Geographically, the area differs significantly from the adjacent Småland coast. The landscape is characterized by elongated valleys, which are continued as fjords into the Baltic Sea. Between the valleys are wooded areas with lots of rocks. The settlement is therefore concentrated along the valleys and the coast.

The geological processes that took place here led to diverse types of rock and deposits of metals (copper, gold, iron), which gained considerable economic importance in the Middle Ages and in recent modern times. The rock formations also enabled a stone industry to be established and Västervik to become the center of the Swedish gravestone industry. It is currently being investigated whether a resumption of gold mining is economically possible.
