Toblach earth pyramids

The Toblach Earth Pyramids ( Italian : Piramidi di terra di Dobbiaco ) are a rock formation and a geological natural monument in the municipality of Toblach in South Tyrol ( Northern Italy ).

description

The Toblach earth pyramids lie at an altitude of 1570 to 1720 meters above sea level , are ocher-colored, indistinctly layered and consist of coarse-grained gneiss material without large boulders. The material comes from the last ice age. The pyramids were built during a storm in 1834. The huge masses of rubble were washed away by the Terner Bach. In the years after the storm, the rain and snowmelt continuously modeled new pillars that held out as long as the protective capstone remained above. The earth pyramids are constantly changing due to erosion . In 1982 they were declared a natural monument.
