Toby Johnson

Edwin Clark “Toby” Johnson (born August 4, 1945 in San Antonio , Texas ) is an American author .

Life

Johnson attended a Catholic school in Texas when he was a child. After his school days he entered the order of the Marianists and then switched to the order of the Servites . He began studying theology at the Catholic Theological Union . In 1969 Johnson worked at the Metropolitan State Psychiatric Hospital in Los Angeles , where he came out as a homosexual man that year . At that time he began to be active as a writer and wrote his first book The Myth of the Great Secret .

In 1970 Johnson left the theological seminary and moved to San Francisco , where he lived for the years that followed. There he began studying at the California Institute of Asian Studies (later renamed the California Institute of Integral Studies ), where he graduated in comparative religion and received a doctorate in consultative psychology. Johnson met the author Joseph Campbell . He also began to work as a psychotherapist in San Francisco. Together with Toby Marotta he wrote the books The Politics of Homosexuality and Sons of Harvard. Gay Men in the Class of '67 .

In 1981 Johnson returned to the city of his birth, San Antonio, where he worked as a psychotherapist and worked for the San Antonio Gay Alliance . He and his partner, Kip Dollar, organized gay pride festivals in San Antonio, and from 1988 to 1994 they ran the bookstore Liberty Books in Austin , Texas. In the years that followed, Johnson wrote more books on LGBT topics and spirituality .
