Altötting dies
Tod von Altötting (short: Tod zu Ötting , adapted from Standard German also Tod von Ötting ; Bavarian : Tod z 'Eding or Tod vo Eding ) is the name of a popular, mechanical statue in the collegiate church of St. Philipp and Jakob in Altötting . The 50 cm high skeleton figure made of silver-plated wood stands on the approximately seven meter high cabinet clock from the 17th century (plague, around 1634), which is located next to the north portal. It is mentioned for the first time in 1664 in a repair invoice as a death clock . It is a representation of death as a grim reaper who mows to the beat of the clock. Legend has it that with every swing of his scythe a person somewhere should die.
