The Tohmajärvi [ 'tɔhmɑjærvi ] is a lake in the same municipality in eastern Finland .
Tohmajärvi has an area of 12.13 square kilometers. It is located at an altitude of 80.2 meters above sea level south of Kemie, the main town of Tohmajärvi municipality. In the northern part the Kirkkoniemi peninsula , on which the Tohmajärvi Church stands, juts out into the lake. The Tohmajärvi is drained by the Tohmajoki River into Lake Ladoga in the Russian part of Karelia.
Tohmajärvi was originally much larger than it is today. The lake was lowered in 1773 and again in the early 1960s to gain pasture.
