Toine Heijmans

Toine Heijmans (born February 1, 1969 in Nijmegen ) is a Dutch writer and journalist. His work includes travel stories, reports and two novels.

Life

Heijmans studied at the Radboud University Nijmegen history and has been called in the newspapers Nijmegen Dagblad and Arnhemse Courant hired as an editor. In 1995 he moved to the Amsterdam daily De Volkskrant , where he became a member of the domestic editorial team. His focus was on minorities and asylum seekers. He became senior travel reporter in 2007 and general reporter in 2010. Several collections of reports by Heijmans appeared between 1998 and 2007. Among other things, they deal with the fate of asylum seekers, for which he received the 2004 anti-discrimination award from the European Union . The book La vie Vinex describes life in the Amsterdam district " Vinexwijk " IJburg . In 2014 he was awarded the Dutch Aad Struijs Persprijs for travel journalism.

Heijmans' debut novel Op zee was published in 2011. It received good reviews and was awarded the French Prix ​​Médicis Étranger in 2013 - the first Dutch work to receive this prestigious literary prize. The novel has been translated into several languages, including an odyssey into German. It is primarily about a man who sails from Denmark to the Netherlands with his daughter. The book was made into a film and the film premiered at the Nederlands Film Festival in 2013 . The novel Pristina , published in 2014, is about the involvement of a deportation officer and an illegal foreigner on a Dutch island.
