Tolbooth from Crail

The Tolbooth of Crail is located in the Scottish town of Crail in the Council Area Fife . In 1972 the building was included as an individual monument in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A.

history

Due to inaccurate records, the year of construction of the Tolbooth , which also included the town hall, is not clear. The year 1517 is sometimes mentioned, but it seems unlikely for the entire complex. The foundation and parts of the building base may date from this time. Records indicate that today's Tolbooth was commissioned in 1598. Possibly the construction dragged on for over a decade, because in 1607 financial means were requested for completion. A year on the Tolbooth that is not completely preserved indicates the year 160 [-]. During the 18th century the building was redesigned twice. In the 1810s, the Tolbooth was described as old and ruinous. It was largely rebuilt between 1814 and 1815. Large parts of the original architecture were lost. Again in 1887 the Tolbooth was revised.

description

Crail's Tolbooth is on Marketgate, near the main thoroughfare ( A917 ) in the center of Crail. The edge lengths of the quarry stone building with natural stone surrounds are 11.8 m and 7.9 m. The five-story tower that forms the western end is striking. It has a square floor plan with an edge length of 6.2 m and a height of 18.3 m. The pointed helmet is reminiscent of the architecture of pagodas .

The tower carries a 66 cm diameter bell that originally served in Crail Parish Church . In 1702 it was exchanged for the smaller town bell from 1614, as the Tolbooth was more centrally located. The Flemish bell bears the inscription IC BEN GHEGOTEN INT lAER ONS HEEREN MCCCCCXX (“I was cast in the year of our Lord 1520”). Below the inscription there are three reliefs. One shows the coat of arms of Mechelen . Presumably it was cast there by Willem van den Ghein .
