The Crail Parish Church is a church building of the Presbyterian Church of Scotland in the Scottish village of Crail in the Council Area Fife . In 1972 the building was included as an individual monument in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A. The surrounding cemetery is classified separately as a Category A monument.

history

The origins of the church go back to the 12th century. Ada, mother of William the Lion , donated the building and made it subordinate to the Cistercian monastery in Haddington . The church was probably built around 1160 under Malcolm IV or a little later under William the Lion. Architectural details suggest that it was built before 1175. As Bishop of St Andrews, David de Bernham consecrated the building in 1243. When it was converted into a collegiate church in 1517, the building was significantly redesigned. In the course of the 18th century the north facade and in 1815 the nave were rebuilt. Further work was carried out in 1828. Today Crail Parish Church serves as Crail's parish church .

description

Crail Parish Church stands in the middle of the surrounding cemetery off Marketgate, next to the Kirkmay House Hotel . Originally it was a Romanesque building, but only fragments that have been integrated into the current structure have survived. The west tower was built around 1200 and the pointed helmet was added around 1500. The reconstruction of the nave in 1815 can be clearly seen on the neo-Gothic south facade with its pointed arched windows . The final gable roof is covered with slate.
