course

The road starts at a roundabout to the north of St Andrews . At this end both of Bannockburn next A91 and those from Kirkcaldy upcoming A915 . It runs through the center of St Andrews, past the university . The A917 leaves the city in a south-easterly direction and traces the coastline in its course, but always runs at least a few hundred meters away from it. Passing the St Andrews Links golf course , it crosses Kenly Water and connects to the hamlet of Kingsbarns . After 16 km the A917 reaches Crail , where the course bends to the southwest. The A917 is tangent to the hamlet of Kilrenny and forms the main street of the city of Anstruther . The villages of Pittenweem and St Monans are connected on the other side of Anstruther . In Elie and Earlsferry the road bends to the northwest. Passing Kilconquhar Loch , the A917 leads through the hamlet of Drumeldrie and finally reaches Upper Largo . There the road joins the A915 (St Andrews – Kirkcaldy) after a total length of 40.5 km .
