Elie and Earlsferry is a town in the Scottish Council Area Fife . It is located about 16 kilometers south of St Andrews and 20 kilometers northeast of Kirkcaldy on the north bank of the Firth of Forth in the East Neuk region . A few kilometers to the east, the Firth of Forth opens up to the North Sea .

history

The originally independent localities Elie and Earlsferry as well as Williamsburgh and Liberty were combined to Elie and Earlsferry in 1929 and installed as a burgh . The name Earlsferry is derived from the former ferry port and the traditional flight of the Earl (then Thane ) MacDuff from King Macbeth . MacDuff is said to have temporarily hidden in a cave near the village and to have been ferried to Dunbar by local fishermen . Elie , on the other hand, is derived from the former island of Ailie , which once marked the port entrance. 1589 awarded Jacob VI. Elie a royal charter . According to local tradition, but very controversial, Malcolm III already awarded . († 1093) Earlsferry a Royal Charter, which fell victim to a fire in Edinburgh . Jacob VI renewed the charter in 1589. Associated with this was the right to organize two weekly markets, two annual markets and customs law .

The port facilities installed in the 16th century were important for the development of the localities. In Earlsferry, the Cistercians operated a way station for pilgrims to St Andrews . Golf has been practiced on Earlsferry Links since the 16th century. Near the village are the ruins of Ardross Castle and the manor Elie House .

traffic

The A917 runs through Elie and Earlsferry and connects the coastal towns between St Andrews and Upper Largo to the trunk road network. Historically, the ferry port, which enabled connections across the Firth of Forth, including to North Berwick , was important. The protected natural harbor on the Firth of Forth coast was an advantage of the facility. In 1863 Elie got its own station along the Fife Coast Railway . However, the route was closed in 1965.
