Toletan Creed

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The text of the Toletan Creed is preserved in two versions: the shorter one, handed down outside of the Council acts , was wrongly ascribed to Augustine , and occasionally also to Jerome ; however, it is actually assigned to the First Council of Toledo . The longer version, on the other hand, represents the synod intended for a synod also held in Toledo or Galicia , or at least the revision approved by Bishop Pastor of Palencia . For this purpose, pastor retouched several passages of the first version as well as the last sixAnathematis attached - the source for this is above all the letter from Leo the Great to Turibius of Astorga .

Both versions are directed against the Priscillian heresies . The structure of the Toletan Creed is characterized by a typical Spanish style and inspired by the work Libellus fidei by Gregory of Elvira . The recognizable in anti- Arian has now a antipriscillianischen scheme and served since then as the model of other Toletanischen creeds.
