tom Dieck

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

tom Dieck is a family name from the Low German language , which has been continued for part of the family since around 1650 in the spelling "tom Diek". Another form of writing was z. B. in the 14th century "ton Dycke". The origin of the family name lies in the assignment to special geographical conditions, which is not uncommon for names. Here it is translated into high German the term "to the pond". The term "Diek" for the dike, which is common in Low German, has nothing to do with the family name.

The ancestor of the majority of today's bearers of this family name comes from the village of Ohmstede near the city of Oldenburg iO. Around 1540 there is an Eylert thom Dieck in the Auskündigerhaus in Bornhorst. The first bearers of the name were farmers and day laborers, whose descendants also settled in the city of Oldenburg from around 1800 and were initially merchants and boatmen there.

Well-known descendants of this family were the painters August tom Dieck (1831–1893) and his nephew Richard tom Dieck (1862–1943). Johanne Sophie Amalie tom Dieck (1817–1855), a sister of August, was the mother of the pedagogue, women's rights activist and politician Helene Lange (1848–1930).

Another origin of this surname can be found in the Münster-Greven area, where it has been referred to in one word as "Tomdieck" since the 19th century.
