Tom Owen (musician)

Tom Owen (* 1980 in Sussex , England ) is a British oboist .

Life

Born in England, Tom Owen received his musical training at the  Purcell School , the  Royal Academy of Music  and the  Hanover University of Music . At the age of 19 he won the Royal Academy of Music Oboe Prize.

Owen has made guest appearances as principal oboist with the  Bavarian State Orchestra Munich , the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra , the  Gewandhausorchester Leipzig , the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra , the Philharmonia Orchestra in London, the  Staatskapelle Dresden , the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin and the NDR Symphony Orchestra . In addition, he regularly plays in international chamber orchestras such as Spira Mirabilis, Musikkollegium Winterthur, Camerata Salzburg and Britten Sinfonia (England). He has been a member of the Cologne Chamber Orchestra since 2016 and solo oboist of the Gürzenich Orchestra since 2006  .

As part of the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival , he performed Johann Sebastian Bach's Double Concerto for oboe and violin with Nigel Kennedy and played several times as a soloist with the Cologne Chamber Orchestra and the Gürzenich Orchestra in the Cologne Philharmonic as well as the Bavarian Chamber Philharmonic, the Dubrovnik Symphony Orchestra, and the West Germans Sinfonia and the Ensemble Resonanz with conductors such as Reinhard Goebel, Markus Stenz and Dirk Joeres. He also gave a solo recital in the Royal Festival Hall sponsored by the Martin Musical Fund. He is a regular guest with the Linos Ensemble, has recorded with the Calamus Ensemble and has given concerts a. a. with the Doric and Alinde string quartets.

Tom Owen is the founder of the Kölner Kammersolisten, who got their first record contract with chamber music Gerald Finzis at MDG in 2014 and is co-founder and 2nd chairman of the association "KammermusikKöln", which has enriched the chamber music scene in Cologne with its series for 5 years.

Owen gives oboe master classes, so far u. a. at the Orchesterzentrum NRW, at the Royal Northern College of Music, Guildhall School of Music and Drama and the Royal Academy of Music (England), at the universities in Cologne, Trossingen, Stuttgart and Detmold and at the Central Conservatory Beijing (China). In addition, he regularly gives solo recitals and chamber concerts in Europe and Asia a. a. at the “Beijing International Oboe Festival 2014”, the “International Double Reed Convention 2015” in Tokyo, the “QingDao International Oboe Festival 2017” and gives an annual master class at the “Duchi d'Acquaviva” festival in Atri (Italy). Tom Owen has been a lecturer in chamber music at the Folkwang Hochschule in Essen since 2017. In 2015 he was appointed Associate of the Royal Academy of Music (ARAM) and is also a passionate jazz pianist.
