The Purcell School

The Purcell School is a specialized music school for young people in Bushey , in the south of Hertfordshire , England . It is the oldest specialized music school in Great Britain. In 2003 she was awarded the UNESCO Mozart Medal , which was accepted by the school's patron, Prince Charles . Simon Rattle is the school's honorary president. In 2015 the school became the first Fazioli Pianoforte Center of Excellence .

The school's students are largely funded by the state music and dance program, along with the school's scholarship funds. It is consistently successful in national and international competitions and has an extensive program for public relations and community work. The majority of students later study at music colleges such as the Royal College of Music or the Royal Academy of Music , while a small minority choose to study music or non-musical disciplines at the university.

history

Rosemary Rapaport and Irene Forster founded the school in 1962 under the name Central Tutorial School for Young Musicians in Conway Hall in central London . The school later moved to Morley College and then to Hampstead in what was then a large Victorian house in Harrow on the Hill . In 1973 it was renamed The Purcell School (after the English composer Henry Purcell ). In 1997 the school moved to the campus of the former Royal Caledonian School in Bushey, Hertfordshire.

In 2012 the school celebrated its 50th anniversary with a concert attended by many former students such as Robert Cohen (cello), Nicholas Daniel (oboe), Jack Liebeck (violin), Catrin Finch (harp), Tim Thorpe (French horn) and Jianing Kong (piano) took part.
