Teo Gheorghiu

Teo Gheorghiu (born August 12, 1992 in Männedorf , Canton of Zurich ) is a Swiss Canadian pianist of Romanian origin who grew up in Rüti , Zurich and London .

Life

Teo Gheorghius's parents immigrated to Canada from Romania and took Canadian citizenship before settling in Switzerland. His mother is the art historian Adina Gheorghiu. He has a younger brother, Max.

He speaks fluent German, Swiss German, English and Romanian. He understands French very well. He describes himself as a socialist.

He loves cycling. In the summer of 2017 he went on a bike tour from London to Morocco . He was able to soak up a lot that he later wanted to express musically.

career

education

Gheorghiu began his pianist career at the age of five with Daniel Höxter and from the age of nine attended the Purcell School in London, a boarding school for musically gifted children under the direction of Simon Rattle , where he studied piano with William Fong .

He studied at the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia with Gary Graffman and later returned to London to study at the Royal Academy of Music . There he met his teacher and mentor Hamish Milne , who, according to Gheorghius, "rekindled his passion for music". He studied with Milne for five years and graduated with a bachelor's degree .

Concerts

He made his concert debut in 2004 at the Tonhalle in Zurich with Robert Schumann's Piano Concerto in A minor, Op. 54 (where the footage for the last scene of the film Vitus was recorded live). In May 2007, his interpretation of the Piano Concerto No. 2 by Sergei Rachmaninoff was received with praise by the Musikkollegium Winterthur . In the same year he gave concerts with the Tokyo New City Orchestra , the Zurich Chamber Orchestra and the Bern Symphony Orchestra . In 2008 he played concerts in Tokyo , Istanbul , London, Saint Petersburg and Potsdam . In 2009 he toured in Zurich, Gstaad , Friborg as well as in Harrogate , Bad Saarow , Bucharest , Bonn , China and Taiwan .

In 2010 he made his recital debut in the Zurich Tonhalle with Bach's English Suite in G minor , Mozart's Fantasy in C minor and Chopin's second piano sonata . In 2012 he played at the Lucerne Festival . He took part in Klassik Bülach and the Lenzburgiade at Lenzburg Castle several times . In 2017 he played at the Schumannfest in Bonn and at the Tchaikovsky Gala of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in London, as well as with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and at the Istanbul Recital Series in Istanbul. In 2018 he took u. a. participated in the Thun Castle Concerts as Artiste Etoile and played Beethoven's 5th Piano Concerto with the Winterthur Music College under Roberto González-Monjas in Winterthur. He also played with the Piano aux Jacobins in Toulouse, as well as with the Mecklenburg State Orchestra Schwerin and the Wuppertal Symphony Orchestra .

Vitus

In the Swiss film Vitus by Fredi M. Murer he plays a highly gifted boy; for this he received the Undine Award for best film debutant in 2007 . The final scene of the film used live recordings from his first concert in 2004 in the Tonhalle Zurich , in which he, the Piano Concerto of Robert Schumann interpreted.
