Thomas James "Tom" Smith (born October 31, 1971 in London , England ) is a former Scottish rugby union player who was used on the position of the pillar . He was active for the Scottish national team and last played for the Northampton Saints . He participated in two tours of the British and Irish Lions .

Smith played for Scotland for the first time in 1997 in the Calcutta Cup game against England . After only three internationals he was nominated for the Lions tour to South Africa , was used in all three test matches against the Springboks and was one of the guarantees for the successful outcome of the series. In 1999 he won the Five Nations with the Scottish national team , the country's last tournament success to date. In the same year he moved from the Glasgow Caledonians to France to CA Brive . In 2001 he left the club and went to the Northampton Saints and was again considered for the Lions tour. As in 1997, he played in all three test matches. He is the only Scot who was used in all six games.

Smith ended his international career in 2005 after the Six Nations . However, he was still active for the Saints until the end of the 2008/09 season . His club career ended with the final of the European Challenge Cup , which Northampton won. At the age of 37, he was the oldest player in the English league when he retired .

Smith will join Edinburgh Rugby's new head coach Rob Moffat as assistant coach. He will take care of the team's strikers.
