Tom Plays Fireworks is a 1943 American animated short film directed by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera .

action

Tom is chasing Jerry again. He escapes into the cellar of the house, where the war is soon raging on a small scale. Both animals entrench themselves on different sides, the champagne corks pop, tomatoes and eggs fly ("Hen Grenades") and light bulbs are thrown from small toy airplanes. When Jerry sank Tom, who was drifting in a washtub , he wrote a war communique as Lieutenant Jerry with the text "Sighted Cat Sunk Same" - an allusion to a radio message made famous by US propaganda from a pilot of the United States Navy , which laconically reported “Sighted Sub Sunk Same” after the (alleged) sinking of a German submarine.

The battle continues with fireworks . In the end, Tom succumbs: When he caught Jerry with a plunger and wants to tie it to a rocket, he knots his hands on the rocket and flies into the sky. The fireworks paint the American flag in the sky and Jerry salutes. At the end he wrote another war communique in which he asked for more cats to be sent (“Send more Cats” - an allusion to the quote “Send (us) more Japs” attributed to James Devereux after the Battle of Wake ).

production

Tom Plays Fireworks was the eleventh Tom and Jerry cartoon in the MGM cartoon series Tom and Jerry . It was released in Technicolor on June 26, 1943 .

Awards

The Yankee Doodle Mouse won in 1944 the Oscar in the category " Best Animated Short Film ". It was the first of a total of seven Tom and Jerry animated films to win an Oscar.
