Tomasz Golka (born October 14, 1975 in Warsaw , Poland ) is a Polish-American conductor and composer .

Life

Golka is the son of pianist Anna Karczewska-Golka and trombonist George Golka. His younger brother Adam Golka is a pianist. In 1980 his family emigrated to Veracruz , Mexico , where his father got a job as a trombonist in the Orquesta Sinfónica de Veracruz . At the age of four, Golka began taking violin lessons from members of the Orquesta Sinfónica de Veracruz . In 1982 his family emigrated to Houston , Texas , where he attended High School for the Performing and Visual Arts . He continued his violin studies with Kenneth Goldsmith and later Sergiu Luca at the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University and received US citizenship in 1996. After completing his bachelor's and master's degree in violin, he learned the conducting trade with David Effron at Indiana University Bloomington and later with Gustav Meier at the Peabody Conservatory of Music at Johns Hopkins University .

In 2003, Golka won first prize at the Eduardo Mata International Conducting Competition in Mexico City . In 2006 Golka was a conductor at the Tanglewood Music Festival . During his stay in Tanglewood he conducted Igor Stravinsky's L'Histoire Du Soldat with the composers Elliott Carter , Milton Babbitt and John Harbison as speakers.

From 2007 to 2012 Golka was the conductor of the Lubbock Symphony Orchestra . In collaboration with the Lubbock Symphony Orchestra , Golka conducted world premieres of works by Shafer Mahoney, Jude Vaclavik and Mathew Fuerst.

From 2008 to 2010 Golka was also conductor of the Williamsport Symphony Orchestra . In 2010 he also became conductor of the Riverside County Philharmonic . From 2014 to 2015 he was chief conductor of the Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional de Colombia in Bogotá, with which he performed some world premieres, as well as the Colombian world premiere of Thomas Adès' Asyla .

On September 1, 2014, Golka married Anna Kostyuchek, second concertmaster of the Riverside County Philharmonic . The two live in Encino , California .
