Tomatin [tə'matɪn] is a distillery for whiskey in Tomatin in the county of Inverness-shire at the eastern edge of the Monadhliath Mountains in the northern Scottish Highlands .

history

The history of the distillery dates back to the 15th century when cattle dealers and drovers obtained their whiskey from a distillery in Old Laird's House on the site of the present distillery. In 1897 the distillery was "legalized" by an official foundation. It went bankrupt in 1906, but reopened in 1909. Until 1956 it was one of the smaller distilleries with two stills. At that time, two stills were added. In 1958 two more were installed. In 1961 another four stills were added and in 1964 another one was added. This made Tomatin the only Scottish whiskey distillery with an odd number of stills, at least for a short time. In 1974 three more stills were installed and the company's own malt house was shut down. Since then, the malt has been purchased from the Glen Ord Maltings . At the time, Tomatin was the largest Scottish distillery with an annual output of 12 million liters of alcohol. In 1985 Tomatin was again insolvent and in 1986 it was taken over by the Japanese investors Takara Shuzo Co. and Okara & Co., who installed a further nine pot stills. Takara Shuzo Co. and Okara & Co. became the first Japanese owners of a Scottish whiskey distillery. Since 1998 it has been operating as Tomatin Distillery Co Ltd. In terms of output, it is now one of the “Top Ten Distilleries” in Scotland.
