Tome de Jesus , actually Tomé de Andrade (* 1529 in Lisbon , † April 17, 1582 in Sagena , Morocco ) was a Portuguese scholar , spiritual writer and mystic.

Life

Tome de Jesus was born in Lisbon in 1529. He came from the nobility and went to the Augustinians. He belonged to the retinue of the Portuguese king Dom Sebastian, who fell in Alcacer de Quivir in 1578, and was captured by the Muslims. He died in Morocco in 1582.

His work " Trabalhos de Jesus ", (The Passions of Jesus) is a mystical text that vividly depicts the Passion of Christ. The book was published between 1602 and 1609. At that time it was translated into various languages, such as Latin, Spanish, English and German. The first German edition was published in Ingolstadt by Haenlinus in 1661 under the title "Aerumnae DN Jesu Christi".
