Tommy Burns (actually Noah Brusso ; born June 17, 1881 in Chesley , Ontario , Canada ; † May 10, 1955 in Vancouver , BC ) was a Canadian boxer and world heavyweight champion from 1906 to 1908.
Burns led an eventful life, for example in 1904 he moved to the Klondike to see a gold mine he had won playing poker . He met the legendary Mike Mahoney and at least reached a draw in the fight with him.
He won his world title in the fight against Marvin Hart on February 23, 1906 in Los Angeles , after 20 rounds (points win). He defended the title eleven times in less than two years. He lost it again on December 26, 1908 against Jack Johnson at Rushcutter's Bay ( Australia ) in fourteen rounds. In the process, he broke Johnson, who was considered a huge favorite, two ribs.
He played his last fight against Joe Beckett in London on July 16, 1920. He lost by knockout in round 7.
In 1996 Burns was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame .
