Tongrube auf Escherfeld is the name of a nature reserve in the Rhineland-Palatinate city of Koblenz . The approximately 5.3 hectare nature reserve with the number 7111-004 is located in the east of Koblenz-Horchheimer Höhe and west of the Lahn between the federal highways B 49 and B 260 . The conservation and development of the area with its water surfaces , its shallow water zones and wetlands as habitats of rare animal species and plants that are threatened in their existence and for scientific reasons is stated as a protection purpose.

The former clay pit , from here clay was transported via a cable car to the Lahn valley and processed into roof tiles there , has been a designated nature reserve since 1990. Next to the clay pit is the Koblenz-Schmidtenhöhe on -site training area for the German Armed Forces , where a large nature conservation project was implemented in 2009.
