Toni Cathomen

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Toni Cathomen (born August 12, 1966 ) is a Swiss molecular biologist . Since 2012 he has been Professor of Cell and Gene Therapy at the Medical Faculty of the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg and Director of the Institute for Transfusion Medicine and Gene Therapy at the University Medical Center Freiburg . He researches the possibilities of gene therapy and therapeutic genome editing with so-called gene scissors, such as TALEN and CRISPR-Cas .

Life

Cathomen studied biology at the University of Zurich . In 1997 he did his doctorate in Zurich with Roberto Cattaneo on the subject of Functional Analysis of Measles Virus Envelope Assembly . He then did a postdoc with Matthew D. Weitzman at the Salk Institute . From 2003 to 2009 Cathomen was junior professor for molecular virology at the Berlin Charité and from 2009 to 2012 professor for gene modification of somatic cells at the Hannover Medical School . Since 2012 he has been researching and teaching as a professor at the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg .
