Tony Curiel

Rafael Antonio Curiel Batista (born July 26, 1931 in Santiago de los Caballeros , † January 25, 2009 in Santo Domingo ) was a Dominican opera singer (baritone).

Life

Curiel grew up in San Pedro de Macorís, where he attended school and trained as a dental technician. He also took part as a singer in various events in the city. In 1954 he appeared in the show Buscando Estrellas by La Voz Dominicana and received a scholarship that enabled him to study singing with José Dolores Cerón , Mario Ferretti and Dora Merten .

In 1956 Curiel made his debut as Alfio in the opera Cavalleria rusticana by Pietro Mascagni , in 1957 he appeared as Giorgio Germont de Verdi's La traviata . In 1959 he recorded an LP with Boleros under the title Quiero verte with the Orquesta San José under the direction of Ramón Antonio Molina . In 1962 a single was released with the waltz No te Vayas by Javier Arce and the Bolero Miedo de quererte , and in 1963 a single with the Tango Sombras . In the 1980s he withdrew from the public.

Curiel was married to the singer Ángela Vásquez . Her daughter Angelita Curiel "La Mulatona" is known as a television entertainer.
