The best-known work of this collaboration is probably the classic film Kes .

In 1980 Garnett made his directorial debut with the drama Prostitute about an ambitious prostitute in London. In the 1980s he temporarily moved to the USA, where he turned to more commercial subjects such as the science fiction comedy Zebo, the Third from the Center of the Star , in which he also addressed social issues such as racism. In the 1990s he returned to Great Britain, where he co-founded the British television production company World Productions in 1991 . Most recently Garnett worked exclusively as a novelist. He died in January 2020 at the age of 83 after a brief illness.
