The Topographical Bibliography of Ancient Egyptian Hieroglyphic Texts, Statues, Reliefs and Paintings (up to and including Volume VII Topographical Bibliography of Ancient Egyptian Hieroglyphic Texts, Reliefs, and Paintings , short title Porter & Moss or PM ) is one from the beginning of the 20th century by Bertha Porter and Rosalind Moss began and continues to this day the bibliography , which pursues the goal of collecting all known monuments and objects of ancient Egypt with hieroglyphic inscriptions and the specialist literature published on this as well as unpublished records. It is considered to be one of the most important reference works in Egyptology .

history

The idea for such a work came to the German Egyptologist Adolf Erman in the late 1890s while working on the dictionary of the Egyptian language . The actual implementation finally took place in the first years of the 20th century on the initiative of his British colleague Francis Llewellyn Griffith . He provided the necessary financial means as well as his private library and hired the bibliographer Bertha Porter, who had previously worked on the Dictionary of National Biography . In preparation for her assignment, Porter learned Egyptian hieroglyphs and worked largely alone on the project for the first 20 years. It was not until 1924 that Rosalind Moss, who had been Porter's part-time assistant since 1917, was employed as the second full-time author.

In contrast to Porter, who only used specialist literature, Moss went on numerous trips to check the literature on the monuments and objects on site. Her first trip took her to the Theban necropolis in the spring of 1924 , for which the first volume of the bibliography was finally published in 1927. The second volume on the Theban temples followed in 1929. In the same year Bertha Porter retired. Rosalind Moss was supported in the publication of the other volumes by Ethel Burney , widow of the theologian Charles Fox Burney . Five more volumes were published by 1952.

After this preliminary conclusion of the project, work began on an updated and expanded second edition. Helen Murray and Jaromír Málek in 1968 were hired as assistants . The second edition of the first two volumes was the responsibility of Moss and Burney, while the third volume was revised by Málek. When Moss retired in 1972, Málek also took over the overall management of the project.

Volumes IV to VII have not yet been reprinted. Instead, Málek pushed ahead with the creation of an eighth volume, which was supposed to collect ancient Egyptian museum objects of unknown origin. With the support of Diana Magee , Elizabeth Fleming and Alison Hobby , four volumes on statues and steles have been created so far . After Málek retired in 2011, Vincent Razanajao became the new editor in 2012. The current focus is on digitizing the project. In 2014, the first seven volumes were made publicly available in PDF format on the Griffith Institute website . A database with the contents of the bibliography is currently under construction.
