Jaromír Málek

Jaromír Málek (born October 5, 1943 in Přibyslav , Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia ) is a Czech Egyptologist . He is a former archivist at the Griffith Institute at the University of Oxford and worked as a contributor to and editor of the Topographical Bibliography of Ancient Egyptian Hieroglyphic Texts, Reliefs, and Paintings (short title: Porter & Moss , PM ), one of the most important reference works in Egyptology.

Life

Málek studied Egyptology at Charles University in Prague , where he received his doctorate in 1969 . During the Prague Spring he took advantage of an invitation to Oxford to move permanently to the United Kingdom . From 1968 he worked as Rosalind Moss' assistant on the Topographical Bibliography of ancient Egyptian Hieroglyphic Texts, Reliefs, and Paintings , a reference work that was supposed to list all known finds of ancient Egypt with hieroglyphic inscriptions. From 1971 he was editor of the work and archivist of the Griffith Institute. In 2011 he retired.

Málek is married to the Welsh writer Jane Jakeman .
