history

Topwell Apotheken AG emerged from the cooperative pharmacies in 2005 , the first of its kind was founded in 1909 on Stadthausstrasse in Winterthur. In the cities of Winterthur and Zurich in particular, the cooperative pharmacies gradually expanded into two separate cooperatives.

The cooperative pharmacies had to fight until the 1970s with a hard competition from private pharmacies and so it happened again and again to boycotts and rush on the part of the syndicate of private pharmacies. Even the initial installation of the first pharmacy in Winterthur was withdrawn from the supplier in Winterthur train station after the latter received a boycott threat. The pharmacy law of the Canton of Zurich also played against the cooperative pharmacies , which stipulated, among other things, that the owner and manager of a pharmacy had to be the same, which was not possible with a cooperative. The license could therefore only be obtained and renewed with the special consent of the Zurich government council. This became a major factor of uncertainty, so on November 4, 1937, the first cooperative pharmacy was refused the renewal of the license with reference to the same pharmacy law of 1854. The situation was resolved with the help of a popular initiative that was approved in 1942 with 64.3% of the votes and amended the relevant medical law.

In 2005, the merger of the cooperative pharmacies in Winterthur and Zurich resulted in the establishment of Topwell Apotheken AG. Today Topwell Apotheken AG operates a total of 37 locations throughout German-speaking Switzerland.

Egli health food stores

The Egli health food stores were founded in 1899 with the opening of Switzerland's first health food store in Zurich by Amalia Egli and had their origins in the life reform movement . In 1991 Egli AG (now Egli Reform AG) was taken over by the Zurich Cooperative Pharmacies. Today there are seven Egli health food stores in all of German-speaking Switzerland , which have since turned into organic retailers .
