Toren op Zuid , also known internationally as KPN Tower , is a high-rise office building in Rotterdam . The 96 meter high house was built between 1998 and 2000. It houses the regional branch of the telecommunications company KPN and was one of the first high-rise buildings to be built as part of the urban renewal program. The building at the southern bridgehead of the Erasmus Bridge is one of the defining structures of the Kop van Zuid on the banks of the Nieuwe Maas .

The building was designed by Renzo Piano . It has a usable area of 22,100 m², which is spread over 23 floors. What is striking about the architecture is the pronounced incline of the facade by six percent towards the street. The building thus corresponds to the neighboring Erasmus Bridge, the cables of which also lie in a plane that is inclined by six percent. The original plan was to support the building with columns facing the street. Although the building still gives the impression of being supported by a pillar, the pillar has no static purpose: The Toren op Zuid would be stable even without a pillar.

The light wall comes from Henri Ritzen from Studio Dumbar. There are 896 green lamps on the building that can be used for light installations and can generate up to four patterns per second. KPN, for example, uses it for artistic performances, but also to advertise major events such as the World Port Days or the Rotterdam Marathon .

At the end of 2017, KPN moved its headquarters from The Hague to this building in Rotterdam. V8 architects signed for the extension and complete renovation of Toren op Zuid . A new glass door makes the building accessible from three sides. Both the adjustments and the expansion were received positively by Renzo Piano.
