particularities |
artificial lakes created by peat extraction |
The Torfkuhlen near Bad Sülze are three lakes in the south-west of the Vorpommern-Rügen district . They lie in the moored lowland that connects the Recknitz valley with the Trebel valley. The peat hollows are about two kilometers southeast of Bad Sülze and about four kilometers northwest of Tribsees and were created from peat cuttings .
The word Kuhle comes from Low German and denotes a depression in the ground or a hollow. The peat extraction explains the rectangular shapes of the three individual bodies of water, which are only separated from each other by two narrow land bridges. The lakes, which extend from northwest to southeast, lie in the Rauhen Moor and border on the Grenztalmoor nature reserve . The water network is together 1200 meters long and up to 340 meters wide in the somewhat wider northern part of the central and largest basin.
Names
The anglers call the Kuhlen "Torfkuhlen Stadtmoor Bad Sülze". The name of the water could also be “The Great Peat Stitch”.
