The tornado outbreak series from May 21 to 26, 2011 covered the US states of Arkansas , Kansas , Minnesota , Missouri and Oklahoma . During this period, 241 tornadoes were counted. A total of 181 people died, although the EF5 Joplin tornado alone in Joplin , Missouri, caused 158 deaths and over 1,000 injuries on May 22.
