Orazio Torsellini

Horatio Torsellini (lat. Horatius Tursellinus; * 1545 in Rome , † 1599 in Florence ) was an Italian scholar and writer of humanism .

Life

The son of a simple fishmonger, Torsellini grew up in the Roman district of Campo Marzio . He was brought up in strict faith, what shaped his works, was an excellent teacher in the Jesuit order . He wrote books on religious subjects common at the time. His didactically inspired historiography was innovative . He wanted to give summaries ( epitoms ) of the most important events from Adam up to 1598 in ten books. The last mentioned event before the demolition due to his death is the Vervins Peace between Spain and France. In 1599 he died of tuberculosis in Florence .

His works have been republished and continued over and over again over the years. They appeared in Latin, Italian and French.
