Torwood Castle is a ruined castle near the Scottish town of Torwood in the Council Area Falkirk . It is a tower house with an L-shaped floor plan. In 1979 the structure was included in the Scottish List of Monuments in the highest category A. Furthermore, the complex was previously classified as a Scheduled Monument . However, the classification was lifted in the 2010s.

history

In the 15th century, King James III appointed the Forrester clan to keep the royal forests of Torwood. Probably in 1566 Alexander Forrester of Garden had his seat Torwood Castle built. In 1585, the Earls of Angus and Mar captured the castle in preparation for their attack on Stirling Castle . After the castle briefly fell to the Baillies in the early 17th century , it became the property of the Forresters of Corstorphine in 1653 . Around this time, several outbuildings were added, but they are no longer preserved today. It is not known when Torwood Castle was abandoned.

When Gordon Millar from Glasgow bought the building in 1957, it was in ruins. Until his death in 1998, Millar was self-employed in the rebuilding of Torwood Castle. However, the work progressed very slowly, so that in the end it was still a ruin. However, Millar managed to stop the decay and stabilize the masonry. The ruin has been owned by a non-profit association since 1998. In 1995, Torwood Castle was first entered on the register of endangered listed buildings in Scotland. Its condition is classified as ruinous, but with little danger.
