The orange castle is a variety of the cultivated apple (Malus domestica). The apple was made in Germany in 1930 from Cox Orange and privy councilor Dr. Oldenburg bred. Similar to the mother variety Cox, the apple is aromatic, but demanding to grow. Today it is mainly grown in the Rhineland .

The medium-sized fruit has a yellowish base color, which is covered with red stripes. Its shell is hard and supple, and if it is stored for a long time it develops a greasy film. The taste of Orangenburg is aromatic and closer to Cox than to Oldenburg. The yellowish-white pulp is medium firm and juicy. The fruits are very round. The cup is flat.

The medium-sized apple blooms early in the year. It is diploid and therefore well suited for fertilization, and is ready for picking in Europe in October, and can be eaten from the fresh store from November to January.

The tree itself is medium-sized and has a broad, well-branched crown. The tree needs good soil and warm, sheltered locations. Orangenburg bears fruit early in life. Its yields are in the medium range, but are regularly and only slightly affected by alternation . Orange castle is one of the most susceptible varieties to fruit tree cancer . It is also very susceptible to fire blight and scab , and moderately susceptible to powdery mildew , shoots and codling moths . When treated with pesticides, Orangenburg is sensitive to sulfur and copper.
