Toshiyuki Moriuchi ( Japanese 森 内 俊 之 , Moriuchi Toshiyuki ; born October 10, 1970 in Yokohama ) is a Japanese shogi and chess player . His player number in the Japan Shogi Association is 183. After winning the Shogi tournament Meijin (Shogi) for the fifth time in 2007, he is the eighteenth eternal Meijin . He and many other successful players belong to the so-called Generation Habu . His maternal grandfather is the former professional shogi player Yukio Kyōsu ( 京 須 行 男 ; 1914-1960).

Childhood and youth

Moriuchi, who attended the same elementary school as Yoshiharu Habu , started Shogi in third grade. He learned the game from his father. He later began to attend the local shogi club and made rapid progress there, so that about a year later he was already participating in his first small tournament. The first attempt to be accepted into the Kansai Kiin is made as a fifth grader. After being told that he was not ready yet, Moriuchi developed further ambition and decided to take the Shoureikai ( Japanese 励 会 ) entrance exam the next year .

Since May 13, 1987 Moriuchi is a professional shogi player of the Japan Shogi Association. His teacher is Osamu Katsuura 9-dan and he is a teacher of Beni Takemata 1-dan himself .

Others

Moriuchi, who also plays western chess and backgammon very well in addition to Shogi , achieved the highest rating in chess, 2331, and in 2006 came 4th at the 39th Backgammon World Championship.
