Kisiwa cha Toten ( Swahili -development of the historical German name Toteninsel via English Toten Island ) lies in the port of Tanga , Tanzania . The place name Tanga (Swahili for sail ) is derived from the shape of the island.
history
On the island there are the ruins of two churches and a mosque . The name of the island comes from the German and stands for the many graves on the island. Since 1854 some people lived on the island, who finally moved to Tanga in 1884. Around 1900 there was a quarantine station on the island .
The island is one kilometer long and up to 290 meters wide. The area is about 16 hectares .
