Opening for lighting the lantern

The death lantern (French lanterne des morts ) in Pranzac , a French commune in the Charente department in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region , was built in the 12th century. The funeral lantern has been on the list of architectural monuments in France as Monument historique since 1905 .

The cylindrical structure stands on a base with six steps. It is closed by a cone on which a stone cross is enthroned. At a height of about one meter there is a rectangular opening that allowed a lamp to be lit in it, which was then pulled up with a chain to the second, smaller opening.
