Tougan is a city and a department encompassing the same area in the West African state of Burkina Faso in the Boucle du Mouhoun region and capital of the Sourou province. The area has 66,706 inhabitants in the main town, which is divided into seven sectors, and the 33 surrounding villages and is located in the land of the Sanan .
Several attempts were necessary before the French could take Tougan when they colonized what is now Burkina Faso. The non-centrally organized Sanan offered stubborn resistance and were not defeated until 1897.
Agriculture is now the main livelihood of the Tougan people. It has been twinned with the city of Rain in the state of Bavaria since 1974 .
Personalities
Saye Zerbo (1932–2013), head of state and government from 1980 to 1982, was born in Tougan.
