Toulouse Olympique Mirail

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Toulouse Olympique Mirail is a football club from Toulouse ; Mirail is the name for the part of the city that is largely congruent with the canton of Toulouse-12 . The club's women soccer players have played at the highest national level at times, which is why this article is limited to their presentation.

history

The founding dates can neither be clearly determined for the association, for which the abbreviation Olympique Mirail (or TOM) was often used , nor for the women's department that was established in the 1970s. The most successful period for female soccer players was in the 1980s and 1990s (see below) . During this time there were two other clubs in the city whose women competed with those of Olympique, namely the AS l'Union and the Olympique Aérospatial Club (TOAC). Until 1991, the women from Mirail were always the most successful from the "Violet City". In 1994 the TOAC attempted to concentrate the strengths of the two women's departments. This failed, however, because of the very different philosophy of the “works club” and the “district association” from Mirail, which is characterized by a high proportion of social problems. While TOAC's women developed into one of the most successful French women's teams in the following years, performance at TOM went in the opposite direction.

In 2002, Mirail's women joined the Étoile Sportive Saint-Simon , founded in 1934 ; under this name they played from 2008 to 2010 again in third class and in 2011/12 for a season in second class. In 2014/15 the ESSS is only represented in the fourth division (Promotion d'Honneur) . Even under the new colors, the association's bond with the people of the district has remained; Since the turn of the millennium, Saint-Simon has been organizing regular benefit days for needy residents under the motto "Employment - Training - Solidarity" and has recently also organized an international girls' soccer tournament (Le Challenge des Étoiles) .

League affiliation and achievements

From the 1983/84 season Olympique Mirail qualified annually to participate in the French championships, which were still held in the final round. In doing so, however, the women mostly failed relatively early; only in two seasons did they get into the round of the last eight teams. In 1987/88 they were subject to the CS Saint-Brieuc and 1991/92 to the Juvisy FCF . In the last-mentioned season, however, this was enough to find acceptance - like local rivals TOAC - in the first division (Championnat National 1 A), which was newly created for the coming season . TOM finished this first year at the bottom of the table and did not return to this level.

In the national cup competition , which was only introduced in 2001 , only the Mirail successor ES Saint-Simon made the headlines when the then third division team 2010/11 only competed in the quarter-finals and only 0: 1 in the two classes higher, later cup winners of the AS Saint-Etienne had to admit defeat.
