The Tour TBR ( Dutch : TBR-toren , German : TBR-Turm ), also called Belgacom Brussels District Tower , is a skyscraper in Quartier Nord , the central business district of the Belgian capital, Brussels . The building is located on Boulevard Du Roi Albert II , opposite the World Trade Center , the Tour Zénith and the Ellipse Building . The Brussels North train station is in the immediate vicinity. The building has been under construction under the project name Brussels Tower since 2012 .

history

The building was constructed during the 1970s as part of the Manhattan plan. It has a height of 84 meters spread over 23 floors, making it one of the tallest buildings in Brussels and one of the tallest buildings in the country . Like the towers of the World Trade Center , the tower stands on an approximately 10-meter-high pedestal that takes up the entire street block. There are two more underground floors with 389 parking spaces.

The first tenant was RTT, a telecommunications company that is now known as Proximus and whose new headquarters ( Proximus Towers ) is in the immediate vicinity of Tour TBR.

In 2006, plans were published to renovate the building, which had been vacant for years. The aim was to modernize the building and increase the office space; this should be done, among other things, by increasing the tower to 46 floors. The project was named Brussels Tower . After protests by residents, the city of Brussels rejected the plans.

In 2012 new plans were published that have already been approved by the city. According to the plan, the height of the tower will remain at 84 meters, but the entire street block will be turned into a high-rise, with the existing base merging with the new design. In order to reduce the bulky impression of the building, a kind of free space is planned between the different sectors of the building. This design also gives it the nickname Tetristors ( Tetris Tower ), as the design is strongly reminiscent of the tiles in the game Tetris .
