Touria Chaoui (born December 14, 1936 in Fez ; † March 1, 1956 ibid) was the first Moroccan and the first Arab woman to acquire a pilot's license.

Life

Her passion for flying developed while she was still at school in Fès. The only flight school in Morocco, in the Casablanca region, initially refused to train a woman. In 1948, however, under the influence of the French director André Zwobada , who knew Touria Chaoui from a role in his film La Septième Porte , Touria received training as a pilot.

In 1952, at the age of sixteen, Touria became the first woman in Morocco to receive a pilot's license. She was the first female pilot in the Arab world. Newspapers around the world reported the sensation. Touria received congratulations from numerous women's organizations. Among other things, she received a signed photo of Jacqueline Auriol , the French test pilot, and niece of President Vincent Auriol . The King Mohammed V of Morocco received them at the palace to congratulate the Princess Lalla Aicha and Lalla Malika took part at the reception as well-wishers. On March 1, 1956, at the age of 19, she was just a copilot for a small airline, she was found murdered. The motive for the murder was never clarified.
