The lake's bright blue color results from the clear water and its great depth: with a depth of 326.8 m, it is the third deepest lake in Japan. The visibility is 15 m.
With an area of 61.1 km², it is the twelfth largest lake in Japan. It has a volume of 4.19 km³. The circumference of the lake is 46 km.
The lake is drained by the Oirase River.
With around 3 million visitors annually, the lake is a popular tourist destination and also suitable for swimming, there are many hotels and guest houses. In late summer, the Kunizankai-Matsuri takes place here, a big festival shared by the three prefectures of Aomori, Akita and Iwate . Ferries and sightseeing boats cross the lake several times a day.
