Caldera lake

The Lake Towada ( Jap. 十和田湖? / I , Towada-ko ) is the largest caldera lake on the island of Honshu in Japan . It lies on the border of the Aomori and Akita prefectures in Towada-Hachimantai National Park . Audio file / audio sample

The lake is 400  m above sea ​​level . The walls of the caldera reach in some places over 1000  m high and reach their summit in the 1159  m high volcano Towada .

The lake's bright blue color results from the clear water and its great depth: with a depth of 326.8 m, it is the third deepest lake in Japan. The visibility is 15 m.

With an area of ​​61.1 km², it is the twelfth largest lake in Japan. It has a volume of 4.19 km³. The circumference of the lake is 46 km.

The lake is drained by the Oirase River.

With around 3 million visitors annually, the lake is a popular tourist destination and also suitable for swimming, there are many hotels and guest houses. In late summer, the Kunizankai-Matsuri takes place here, a big festival shared by the three prefectures of Aomori, Akita and Iwate . Ferries and sightseeing boats cross the lake several times a day.
