The Tower Building was a skyscraper in New York City . The Tower Building was designed by Bradford Lee Gilbert and built from 1888 to 1889. It is often referred to as the world's first skyscraper , but what is clear is that it is one of the earliest steel- framed high-rise buildings . It was on Manhattan's southern tip, and was 50 Broadway . The lot along Broadway was only four feet. To the rear, the 48 m high building extended 33 m. Over the next 2 decades, the number of skyscrapers in the area grew rapidly, including the Manhattan Life Insurance Building from 1895 and the Knickerbocker Trust Company Building from 1909, which adjoined the Tower Building to the north. The twelve-story tower building was demolished in 1913 and replaced by a four-story building. At this point the tallest building in the city, the Woolworth Building , had already reached 150 feet.
