Tower Millennium Pier
The Tower Millennium Pier is a pier on the River Thames . It is located in central London next to the Tower of London and Tower Bridge . An investor at this point has existed for several centuries; the current investor dates from 2000.
Tower Millennium is called at by the Thames Clippers on the regular London route as well as by regular tourist trips and private charter boats. The pier is operated by London River Services . It took over the pier from the Port of London Authority after the current building was built .
The pier was built as part of the Thames 2000 plan of the London city government, which wanted to upgrade the river. In total, five new piers were built in the city for £ 18 million. The number of users of the river increased by one million per year in the following years to a total of six million passengers. The Millennium Pier Tower in particular often suffered from overcrowding and tightness after just a few years. The pier was further expanded in 2011/2012 in preparation for the 2012 Summer Olympics . Among other things, the pier was extended by 30 meters and its capacity increased by 25%.
From 2001, an E-class lifeboat belonging to the Royal National Lifeboat Institution was docked at the pier. This was the first time the RNLI monitored a river rather than open water. In 2006 it moved. In the meantime the former Waterloo Pier had been converted into the Tower Lifeboat Station . The new jetty does not have to perform any other tasks apart from rescuing shipwrecked people.
