Trần Quang Trân

Trần Quang Trân (* 1900 in Vietnam , French Indochina , † 1969 ) was a Vietnamese painter , lacquer artist , draftsman and illustrator .

Life

Trần Quang Trân was one of the first artists at the time of French Indochina to study at the École supérieure des beaux-arts de l'Indochine (EBAI; since 1945 University of Fine Arts of Vietnam ), founded in the Hai Ba Trung district of Hanoi in 1925 . He studied there from 1927 to 1932. At the Paris colonial exhibition in 1931 he was shown in the program of the presentation of the then three art academies in Indochina.

He was one of the pioneers of the Vietnamese contemporary painting tradition as well as one of the first to be interested in the lacquer technique and to develop it considerably. To this end, he also undertook research trips to Japan in the 1930s . He introduced a technique in which gold dust was placed between layers of red lacquer or, in general, colored powder between layers of lacquer. The painters Phạm Hậu , Trần Văn Cẩn , Nguyễn Khang and Nguyễn Gia Trí were also inspired by this technique .

In 87 phố Charron , today's phố Mai Hắc Đế , he had a paint shop, and in phố Tố Tịch he also had a workshop in which he made and restored furniture. He illustrated for the newspapers Bắc Kỳ Thể thao , Đông Tây , Tiểu thuyết Thứ Bảy , Cậu ấm and Vịt đực , taught painting in the early 1940s at the private schools of Thăng Long and Gia Long and from 1949 at the art college. From 1958 to 1962 he worked for the Vietnam Film Studio in the field of animated films and taught at the Vietnamese Film School.

Despite its importance, he left only a few works, including oil paintings, watercolors, wash drawings, and charcoal drawings. Presumably none of the lacquer works that made him famous exist anymore. His well-known lacquer painting “La mare aux eaux scintillantes” ( The pond with sparkling water ) was probably the first lacquer painting realized in Indochina, which inspired the later Vietnamese lacquer master Nguyen Gia Tri . The work was in the collection of the EBAI, but was lost at the beginning of the Indochina War .

In the 1930s, Tran Quang Tran changed his stage name and signed his paintings with the pseudonym Ngym , then Nghi Am . His painterly work has a great affection for "the scenes with empty streets, temples, former buildings, bodies of water ... it mixes a European technique and an Eastern view."
